WEEE Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment
What is it?
The laws on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment are changing again this year. It will now be illegal for any business to throw away computers, telephones, light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, etc. with general waste. They are considered hazardous waste and must be recycled. More over, if you sell any of these to consumers, you are now obliged to take back their old product on a like for like basis. Fortunately, the government hasn’t got its act together yet, but we are expecting guidance from the DTI at any time.
What does it mean?
A major target for our society has to be to reduce the amount of waste going to land-fill sites. This can be done through re-using computer components where possible, and if not, then by arranging for the raw materials to be processed for re-use.
Who is involved?
The European initiatives on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), and Restrictions of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (the ROHS directive) were designed to address this topic.
The DTI and DoE are drawing up standards, and practices, and our consultants will be happy to explain what this might mean for your business.
What does it mean for business?
As a business, you will be expected to pay to have electrical and electronic products recycled; but you are allowed to pass this cost on to your customers. You are allowed to show this cost to your business customers, but recycling must be built into the cost of the product for consumers.
Furthermore, if you manufacture electrical or electronic products, these must now be built to more environmentally friendly standards.
What does It for consumers?
As a consumer, the biggest change is that you can take your old electrical or electronic products to your vendor when buying a new product, and they must take it for recycling, as long as it is like for like.
Note that this doesn't’ apply when you have products delivered.
Data Wipe
Whilst more criminals are becoming more technically competent, we are all storing more sensitive information on our PCs. Now consider what you will do with your PC when it gets to the end of its life and you replace it. Deleting files merely changes an entry in the file access table on your hard drive. The data is till there, and recoverable. You will need an IT professional to eradicate the information, and in extremely sensitive cases, the discs should be destroyed.
You also have obligations under the data protection laws to protect your clients’ data, not to mention the damage to your business if the information gets into the wrong hands.
